At Our Lady and St Werburgh's, we recognise that a good understanding and application of English skills is essential for children's communication and future prospects. Alongside Reading, Writing is a skill that we aim to teach across the curriculum, to ensure children to confidently express themselves in written form in a variety of contexts. 

 

The skills of writing incorporate spelling, handwriting, composition, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation, and it is important that these skills are not taught in isolation. In addition, effective writing needs to be carefully planned, edited and redrafted. The teaching of writing is informed by the reading of high-quality, engaging texts as a model and stimulus for independent writing. Our units of work in English are sequenced to ensure that the skills for writing are practised in each unit, to enable the build-up of skills for a purpose.
